You may see these terms used interchangeably. Essentially, all calligraphy is hand-lettering but not all hand-lettering is calligraphy.
That’s because calligraphy uses special writing implements to achieve nuances in letterforms; downstrokes are often thicker than upstrokes, which is something that can’t be achieved by just any type of pen.
Of course, we can always mimic the look of calligraphy without a proper pointed pen and ink (aka “fauxlligraphy”), but this would be considered hand-lettering since you’re manually adding thicker downstrokes to get that calligraphy look.
Neither is better than the other; it’s all about style preference. Just know that not all lettering is created equal!

If you can dream it, there’s a pretty good chance I can do it.
I’ve added my calligraphy and lettering to a number of surfaces of varying size and shape, including glass, wood, marble and even oyster shells.
Of course, not all surfaces are created equal. I’m happy to recommend the best application for your project.

I’ve been doing this long enough to know what’s important; if there’s a way we can streamline, cut costs or find a better way of doing things, I’ll always advocate for what’s best for you and your project.
My gallery is a reflection of the type of work I want to do now, but if you take a look at my Instagram, you can scroll back to all kinds of projects I’ve had the pleasure of working on. From teaching hand-lettering at New York Fashion Week to designing stationery for people who live thousands of miles away, I’m so blessed to have experienced so much in the past 10+ years.
People say I’m easy to work with, flexible and attentive. (When you love what you do, how can you not be?)
I’ve been a marketing and advertising professional for the past 15+ years with experience in both accounts and creative, so I’m all about setting expectations, checking in and staying organized, then exceeding those expectations with a tangible piece of art.
